DMZ Diary

#28 July 2004 , after moving house

So, this is pretty much the episode that was the back breaker, having gone through a lot of life changes and neglecting my recording and record collecting this was the episode where I had to make a decision about whether to continue creating the show. Actually I should really give a lot of credit to Banzai at M4 Radio for asking me, as I write this he's just survived one hurricane in Florida and has another one bearing down on him. I've settled down enough that I know I can continue to release episodes and still be the nice guy my wife married.

Part 1

Artist Track Label Buy? (readme)
Bassbin Twins ESW Marine Parade
This is the intro track we play at the start of every show.

Electric Six
Dance Commander (Benny Bennasi Mix)
The Electric Six are great fun, they have great tracks for the dance floor even when they're not remixed into nutty electro trance versions. Look out for a remix of 'Danger (High Voltage)' from yours truly - due too appear in an upcoming episode.

Armand Van Helden
Call My Name Southern Fried
Armand Van Helden has been around for a long time, but his recent releases on Southern Fried records have been some of the poppiest and most accessible tracks from the great man yet. From other producers I might use the word 'cheese' but Armand has a pedrigree that raises him above such comparisons. Just enjoy his new material, and hope that maybe it'll steal some mainstream audience away from Britney et al.
Santos
Pray Shakadelic
Santos has been producing a lot of breaks tracks on the MOB label recently but this harks back a couple of years to the days when he was making house music that stood out from the crowd.

Zoot Woman
Gem Wall Of Sound
Whew, definately a lot more subtle than the last couple of tracks, Zoot Woman is basically Jacques Lu Cont collaborating with Johnny and Adam Blake.

Soul Of A Man
Acid Punch Finger Lickin'
Rarely does a week go by without me playing some of the funky breaks from Finger Lickin' records, this is a remix of the original (which is on the B-Side of SOAM's tribal breaks monster 'The Drum') which turned up on the 'Fractured' compilation from DJ Hyper.

Sasha
Rabbitweed Deconstruction
This is one of the tracks on the Xpander EP, and, while all the DJ's loved playing Xpander, it would take a while for Rabbitweed to become one of those important moments in the growth of breakbeat. Sasha also demonstrated his prog breaks credentials when he remixed Madonna's 'Ray Of Light' in 1997.
Blaze feat Palmer Brown
My Beat (Jan Driver Mix) Tommy Boy
Sad musicologist fact, this track is a 132bpm 4/4 number, perfect for dancing, but the vocal only runs at 115.5bpm in 7/8 time. Not that most people care, they just want to get down with the beat.

DJ Dan
Needle Damage (That Zipper Track) Duty Free
DJ Dan always gets listed on flyers as 'Americas Most Beloved DJ', as much as we enjoy him most of my fellow DJ's think that the quote is a little bit out of date and people need to reassess things. This track on the other hand never gets out of date.
Unknown

I'll figure this out later....

Azzido da Bass
Dooms Night (Stanton Warriors)
My hands would fall off if I wrote everything I said in the show about this track.

Funk D'Void
Diabla Soma
Soma records released this monster crossover techno track back in 2001, if anyone ever asks you what techno music sounds like - this is one of the finest examples there is.
Hatiras
Spaced Invader
This was one of the biggest tracks of 2000, it got remixed in all sorts of ways, and even became a Drum n Bass anthem when J Magik speeded it up to 45rpm and put a break underneath it. But I'm proud of my original version even though I've never played any of the other 3 tracks on the EP.....

Tall Paul
Everyone's A Rock Star Duty Free
Everyone's a rock star.... except these days it appears that everyone's a DJ, I saw video recently of Tommy Lee (Ex Motley Crue) doing the DJ thing in Ibiza. Of course you realise, this means war ;-)

Week 28 Guest - Hank The Guy With The Records

Hank is the guy with the records I guess? He's also the Guy who runs AmuckConcepts.net and has beem the man behind many free parties on Treasure Island in the San Francisco bay. He also play's some great breaks tracks and has even managed to find some stuff from Distinctive records that isn't in my collection!

Stay Funky....
see ya Next Week.
