DMZ Diary

#23 November 2003

Having recorvered from getting married and going on my Honeymoon I hit the decks and produced another great episode of the DMZ featuring everthing from hard as nails techno to disco era Elton John - all mixed together with the finest in DJ glue of course......

Part 1

Episode 23 Part 1
Artist Track Label Buy? (readme)
Bassbin Twins ESW Marine Parade
This is the intro track we play at the start of every show. Nice to hear it again after a few months off.

Plump DJ's (Feat Gary Numan)
Pray For You Finger LIckin'
I find it ironic that most of the electroclash artists attempted to emulate Gary Numan's pioneering (at the time) early 80's sound, but never actually bothered to collaborate with him. Instead it took the breakbeat genius of the Plump DJ's to get him back on record - providing vocals for one of the moodier tracks on their Eargasm album.

Fire
Fire (Faith Is Alive) Acetate
I've no idea where the sample comes from, but this record is always good for those darker moments on the dancefloor.
Chemical Brothers
It Began In Afrika AstralWerks
Originally this track appeared at Electronic Battle Weapon #5 - another in the Chem's series of white labels.... as if it's a big secret as to who's behind the production knobs.

Shaktiman
Wandering Sound
Lightweight laid back track which reminds people how progressive house should sound.

Der Dritte Raum
Hale Bopp FFRR
Bleepy tech-house named after the biggest comet of my lifetime, I used to study comets and asteroids back when I was at Armagh Observatory.

Timo Maas
Eclipse Bush
Another astronomical themed record, the astronomy never leaves me - I wonder how many other DJ-Astronomer-Computer Hackers are out there?
Marco Bailey vs Redhead
Watch Out
Some good old fashioned techno... that's what this is.

Tony Rohr
Speaker Master
Obey the speaker Master!
Spork
Freak Airdog/Southern Fried
This record had been around for a while when it hit big in the latter half of 2003, sampling Missy Elliot has always been a popular way to get some dancefloor attention, Indeed it got a proper chart friendly re-release on Southern Fried records.

Grooveyard
Watch Me Now
Time to lighten things up a bit, this record always raises a smile.

Stetsasonic
Talkin' All That Jazz
Slowing things down a lot, and going all disco for the last few beats in the show.

Miguel
Sunny Cove
I grabbed this from a San Francisco sessions compliation, a perfect embodiment of the deep SF house sound that if everywhere in the Bay area.

Elton John
Are You Ready For Love (Ashley Beedle Mix) Southern Fried
There's quite a story behind this track, it was pretty much ignored when it was firt recorded, but it became something of a Balearic fixture and eventually got a re-release on Southern Fried records and proceeded to go straight to number one in the UK. For me it holds a special place, it was the record we played for the first dance at my wedding.... I was indeed ready for love.
