Scott Manley, S&M are my initials, and I use the pseudonym when I'm DJ'ing - hence "DJ S&M"
Why do You need a Pseudonym to DJ under?
If it's good enough for Sasha, Junior Cartier, Felix Da Housecat or Fatboy Slim then it's good enough for me. S&M is easier to remember too - that makes a big difference in San Francisco, where there's an aspiring DJ in every household.
Do you do anything other than playing records?
In the past I've worked as a software developer for several companies including Napster (before Roxio bought them), Myplay, Qualys and of course imeem - I specialise in developing networking protocols and application security.
Before I got into this whole dotcom thing I was a research student at Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland. I can also claim to have developed one of the first mp3 DJ systems and the earliest mp3 internet radio station - back when I was working as an astronomer and looking for outlets for my musical aspirations.
Where can I catch you playing out?
Since the arrival of my daughter Skye, you can't, I've played a few gigs with her at The Oasis in Oakland and a couple of Burning Man benefits, but right now most of my DJ'ing is in my basement club (with a bar and DJ booth!). Before this little bundle of joy came into my life I was best known for my residency at 'Halflife' in San Francisco. I have a somewhat outdated list of previous appearances in my DJ Resume.
What Kind of Music do you play?
Whatever music sounds best for the moment, I can't stick to one style of music all the time since I get bored quickly, I'm playing a great deal of Nu-Breaks right now for my Halflife residency, but even then I sneak in the odd house/electro/acid/whatever record during my sets. I guess I have a short attention span from all the coffee I drink.
What Kind of Music DON'T you play?
Anything boring and predictable, a lot of chart targeted music falls into this category. There are some truly terrible remixes out there as well - I remember seeing Sarah Brightman doing a cover version of 'Whiter Shade Of Pale' with the club remix by ATB - what was more worrying was that the shop had sold a few copies of this!!!.
How many records do You own?
Over two thousand on vinyl, about 6000 tracks in total - in addition to about 800 CD's
What gear do you use?
At the clubs, I've got no choice, I'm usually stuck with Technics SL1200's. My home setup is a set of Vestax PDX-D3's with a Numark EM-260 Mixer (with built in Kaoss pad), I have a cheap GLI DC-5000 (piece of crap) CD system for the odd CD.
Depending on the setup I may also wheel out my iBook which I use to play mp3s with the awesome Ms Pinky software.
Do You get dressed up when you DJ?
Not yet... those leather masks interfere with my headphones.
