DMZ Diary

#8 - April 19th 2003 - Rock City

I really manage to show my age this week, starting out with a record that's 15 years old, playing several remixes of old 70's rock acts, and, outside of this radio endeavour, I moved in with my Girlfriend. This last fact made me realise a number of things - firstly, bags of records seem so much heavier when you're not carrying them to a gig, I've happy carried two or three bags without thinking about anything more than 'what will I play tonight'. Secondly I realise the depth of my music obsession when It took one van load to move all my furniture, and 2 loads to move my music collection and sound hardware. And thirdly music has truly astounding medical qualities, after moving heavy boxes for 14 hours I was hurting somewhat, but I had enough energy to rebuild my DJ setup. That's me getting my priorities straight.

I did sleep a lot however.

And I did produce another edition of theDMZ, unaffected by the turmoil surrounding its birth, it once again comes kicking and screaming across the airwaves with the best of everything rolled into one neat, beatmached, package. So... listen away, and of course stay Funky.

Tracklisting - Hour 1

Artist Track Label Buy? (readme)
Bassbin Twins ESW Marine Parade
This is the intro track we play at the start of every show. Slammin Beats!

Stakker
Humanoid Jumpin' & Pumpin'
Probably one of the oldest records I've played on the show (maybe one day I'll do a special with my '86 chicago house collection) - This came out 15 years ago and still finds its way into my DJ sets.

Planet Perfecto
Bites Da Dust Perfecto
Planet Perfecto is a pseudonym which is shared around producers, maybe it's because most of the Planet Perfecto records are really cheesy ("Bullet From A Gun" anyone?). I hear that this remix of Queen was masterminded by none other than James Holden, abandoning his usual mathematically precise synths and effects and turing the knob labelled 'groove' up to 11.
Timo Maas
Der Schreiber (Funkin' In NYC Mix) Home
The percussion and bass on this record clearly inspired the Queen remix, so it's only fair to bring this along for the ride. This is my favourite mix, it's breaky enough and housey enough to mix into almost anything.

Marcus Nikolai
Bushes (Norman Cook Remix) Southern Fried
This Jazzy house classic is a staple amongst San Francisco DJ's, but it's cheeky lyrics were always crying out for an equally Cheeky remix - Norman Cook is just he man for that job then!

Sam La Moore
Takin' Over Underwater
Darren Emerson knows a monster house anthem when he hears one - I guess that's why he signed this beast to his record label.

Archigram
Carnival Crydamoure
It took an eternity for this to get a proper release, it even seemed impossible to find a good copy on "insert favourite napster clone" - but at last I can bring you this slice of good time house music, it just feels like it could run forever.
Slide
Slippety Slide Finger Lickin'
No relation to Slide from progsters Cass & Slide, this is the latest addition to my collection from Finger Lickin' records, purveyors of the funkiest breakbeats and home to the Plump DJ's and Drummatic twins. For The record - Slide are Robin 12Tree and Jason Cohen of Laidback fame.

Kool Hand Luke (AC/DC vs Missy Elliot)
Gettin' Freaky In Black Bootleg
Get Your Freak On has been remixed more than any record I know, Missy Elliot has Duetted with more bands than are humanly possible all through the wonder of the Bootleg. This is one of my favourites - Australian/Scottish rockers and Missy E. - I like to play this right at the end of my set, leave people with a smile.
Smith & Selway
15.5 Remake Tronic
Bangin' Techno track which I discovered on John Peel's Fabric CD - John Peel is a broadcasting legend, he's in his 60's and he's still playing Happy Harcore mixed with country and western.

Vanguard vs Queen
Flash (Tomcraft Mix) Nebula
This is the 3rd remix from a rock band this week, I didn't mean for it to happen, but whatever, this remix of the Flash Gordon theme perfectly recreates the Kitsch style of the movie which shaped my childhood. Watch out for Tomcraft's 'Loneliness' - a monster in the making I tell you - as soon as I get a copy and play it I'm sure you'll agree.

Robbie Riviera
Funk-a-tron (FSG Remix) Direction
Insanely annoying trance record with a synth that burns itself into your brain. BUT it has this great breakdown which slows the track down to a demonically slow and grinding section. This record also bears a strong resemblance to Robbie's "Hum Melody" which Leni K finished with last week - this record came first.

Phil Kieran
Your House (Breaks Mix) Skint
Phil Kieran possesses the finest DJ production skills in Ireland, and this is a remake of one of the catchiest vocal hooks in house music history. This is simply speaking dancefloor dynamite - nothing else comes close.
Paul Van Dyk
Nothing But You (PVD Club Mix) Vandit
As far as trance goes Paul Van Dyk was the king, his melody driven trance soundscapes set the standard. So trance may no longer be cool, but a new record from PVD always deserves to be checked out - at the very least to restore fiath in the genre in the face of rubbish from Flip and Fill.

Hour 2 - Special Guest - DJ M

Trance and progressive house from Balitimore based DJ M (Not to be confused with San Francisco's DJ M), he's the guy behind Realtime Management - a DJ booking agency in the Baltimore/DC area which is home to some past and future guests on the Show. He also runs DJ M Industries which provides a whole host of related services to the entertainment industy. But here we're only interested in his skills behind the decks and the records he's putting on them. I'm sure you'll agree he more than satisfies us on these criteria.

Stay Funky....
see ya Next Week.
