DMZ Diary

#3 - March 15th 2003 - DMZ Goes To The Movies

It's a big week in the entertainment Business, most people know that the Academy Awards AKA The Oscars are imminent, celebrating and rewarding the best of Hollywood. Fewer people know that this week is also the Miami Winter Music Conference, where all the top DJ's and producers in the business gather for a week to share their new tunes and try to figure out what tracks are going to be the big summer hits. Every other dance music show is doing something Miami themed, so I figured I'd go the other way and produce a movie themed show.

Dance Music has a pretty good pedigree in movies, it all started out with the occasional movie sample being borrowed for some rave monster, frequently without the approval of the movie's producers. But over time dance music started giving back to the silver screen, tracks were borrowed for soundtracks to movies like 'Hackers' and 'Trainspotting', later some producers were asked to produce theme tunes specifically for movies - Orbital have produced title tracks for 'The Saint' and 'The Beach'. But even more recently some producers are being trusted with scoring entire movies - David Holmes first album was called "This Film's Crap, Let's Slash The Seats" but  nowadays he's producing some absolutely fantastic soundtracks to hollywood flicks such as "Out Of Sight" and "Oceans 11", he even won a handful of awards for that. Although a dance music producer has yet to be even nominated for a movies soundtrack it can only be a matter of time.

Dance Music works well in movies, a lot of it is already instrumental and therefore easy to adapt to the screen, it also has good rythmic qualities which definately suit certain kinds of movie. And... for the cash conscious hollywood mogul, I'm sure the work of a single producer in a bedroom studio comes with a price tag a little smaller than the London Symphony Orchestra.

So here we go with an hour of cinematic themed music, and for the second hour we're keeping the movie theme going with a genuine movie star and all round nice person - Forest Green.

Action!

Tracklisting - Hour 1

Artist Track Label Buy? (readme)
Bassbin Twins ESW Marine Parade
This is the intro track we play at the start of every show. Slammin Beats!

Felix Da Housecat
Silver Screen  City Rockers
It was a toss up between this or Madame Hollywood, in the end this won because the vocals are more radio friendly, but the whole album is steeped in Hollywood glamour.
The Propellorheads
On Her Majesty's Secret Service Wall Of Sound
Modern version of one of the most distinctive movie themes, Bond has a great music pedegree on top of his flawless British Manners.
Orbital
Halcyon, and on, and on.... FFRR/London
This was used as the theme tune to Hackers, given that I also work in the computer security business I can confirm that the whole movie is jaw droppingly inaccurate. But what the hell it has a great soundtrack that managed to eventually spread itself over 3 CDs.
Jakatta
American Dream Ministry of Sound
Originally appeared as a white label with the title 'American Booty', cheekily borrowing bits from a movie with a similar title.
Bedrock feat KYO
For What You Dream Of Stress
Most people don't rememebr this track from Trainspotting, but that doesn't stop it being a top tune from John Digweed.
The Propellorheads
Spybreak Wall Of Sound
Second appearance for the Propellorheads, this provided the soundtrack to the intense lobby shootout scene in The Matrix.
Afrika Bambatta And The Soulsonic Force
Planet Rock (Oakenfold's Swordfish Mix) Tommy Boy
What is it with hacker movies? They're all so embarrasingly bad. At least Swordfish had a few great moments in it's Paul Oakenfold produced soundtrack.
Phil Stier
Magic Carpet Ride Sony
Go was a fun movie, I don't know anyone who's every had such a cray weekend in reality, but this is Hollywood, everythings bigger and badder - including this remix of a Steppenwolf track.
Elvis vs Junkie XL
A Little Less Conversation BMG
Technically this hasn't been in a movie yet, although it's so distinctive you know someone will try. But the Original was dug out by David Holmes for his amazing soundtrack to 'Oceans 11', which of course indirectly led to the Remix.
The Freestylers
Weekend Song Freskanova
Apparently this was in some romantic comedy called 'Sweet Home Alabama', never seen the movie, but it does give me an excuse to play the Freestylers - which can't be such a bad thing after all.
Underworld
Born Slippy (NUXX) JBO
Another one from Trainspotting, this time it's the track that everyone remembers, even if the lyrics are somewhat cryptic.
Orbital
The Sinner FFRR/London
B-Side of 'The Saint' with a slower tempo and a proper 4 to the floor beat - i.e. I played this version because it mixes more easily.
BT
Believer Sony
BT was the musical director for the movie, but this was the only original track of his which made it onto the soundtrack CD. Which is a shame because his work on other movies has been nothing short of Stellar
Bedrock
Heaven Scent Bedrock
Digweed's Most Exciting moment, and the climax to San Francisco underground rave movie 'Groove' - which leads us nicely into our guest DJ.

Hour 2 - Guest DJ - Forest Green

Forest is such a nice person, when I first met her she was giving everyone Massages - how many DJ's do you know that would do that? She was one of the DJ's in the move 'Groove', a small independent movie about a warehouse party in San Francisco. But she's been a great DJ for long before that and manages to cover a lot of musical ground in her sets. For this set she brings a selection of minimal house, techno and electro and has a little assistance from her partner Chris Burfine - together they make up Organized Chaos - check out their websites for more info.
