DMZ Diary

#13 - June 6th 2003 - Lucky For Some

This is week 13, some people consider 13 to be unlucky, not me, luck has nothing to do with it, at least I don't like to trust to it. I don't play the lottery or gamble when I go to vegas, because cold hard statistics says that I'm more likely to lose money over time. I guess I know enough maths to have a decent chance of counting cards at blackjack, but I probably don't have the patience. I go to Las Vegas every year for Defcon the infamous hackers convention where experts compare their latest research with the black hats latest exploits, and playing 'spot the fed' is part of the official conference schedule. Computer security is what pays my bills, my vinyl addiction is too costly to support through DJ fees alone, so I write software in my day job. It removes the element of luck from my cash flow - I like that.

At the other end of the scale I used to work as an astronomer, not for the money, but because I was dead set on getting a PhD and because I was fascinated by the possibility of a killer asteroid coming from space and wiping out the human race. This was a science where the justification was driven by statistics, and given that the stakes were so huge this is a things where we should try and avoid having 'luck' become part of the equation.

I Guess I'm just a control freak. Anyway the world isn't going to end soon and there are always plenty of smart people working to avert the problem. So time for some escapist nonsense, here's the show lineup with the usual list of massive new tunes, and a few choice classics.

Don't trust to luck, you can always me sure of good tunes on theDMZ.

Tracklisting - Hour 1

Artist Track Label Buy? (readme)
Bassbin Twins ESW Marine Parade
This is the intro track we play at the start of every show. Slammin Beats!

Playgroup
Make It Happen Playgroup
Disco-Punk is now a bona fide movement, at least as far as we're concerned,

The Scumfrog
Music Revolution Positiva
The revolution will not be televised, it'll be mixed! Gloriously epic chunk of electro house music from positiva records, it went over like a monster when I dropped it at a beach party over the weekend.
Soul Of Man
The Drum Finger Lickin'
A different sound for Finger Lickin', moody beats with a building tribal drum track, sounds great on the beach.

Rennie Pilgrem
Some Place Funky (Ladbroke Mix) Mob
Short run release on Mob records, not as dark as a lot of his other stuff, which suits me just fine.

Morel
Funky Car (Love Is Dead) Yoshitoshi
My wonderful ex roommate (Hi Jen!) turned me onto this fantastic record when she heard it on a Deep Dish Mix.

Timo Maas
Eclipse Nervous
This is an older Wet n' Hard number from 1999, back then Timo was just a rising star with wierd records and a rubber face. Now he's a superstar, with wierd records and a rubber face.
Midfield General
Coatnoise (Dave Clarke Mix) Skint
Midfield General is Damien Harris, founder of Skint records, which plays host to Fatboy Slim and Dave Clarke, no surprise then that Dave ended up doing this top notch remix of Coatnoise.

Kiss My Bass
Kiss My Bass White
I've no idea who this is, it's a single sided slice of vinyl which has a habit of rocking every party I play it at.
BT
Somnambulist (Burufunk Mix) Nettwerk
We've been waiting for new stuff from BT for a long time, we've had a few token collaborations and remixes, but finally after what seems like an epic battle against adversity we get this first track from his new album.

Circulation
Silver Circulation
This is fast for a circulation record, it's almost trance speeds, but it's still deep and moody in ways that only circulation can manage.

Da Hool
Meet Her At The Love Parade (Fergie Mix) Bonsai UK
The original was fantastic, even though the organisers of the love parade disowned it, this update from a couple of years ago was hard as nails but irresitably danceable.

Basic Units
Explode Firewire
This comes on a 4 track ep alongside Matt Carter, this is definately the standout track.

Mr Velcro Fastener
Electrical Appliances Air
Mr Velcro Fastener has a great sense of humour, and so do the Plumps, so having them remix was a great idea, and the original version is great as well, somethign any nerd can sing along to.

Hour 2 - Special Guest

T.Linder, Detroit based techno DJ - 'The After School Groove' dropping plenty of old school techno, some of these tracks were considered old when I started listening to techno. I love this set because it represents a history lesson and I'd like to think that at some level there are listeners who are being educated in dance music.

Stay Funky....
see ya Next Week.
