DMZ Diary

#11 - May 23rd 2003 - No Slowing Down

Eleven shows in and I'm starting to get the hang of the whole production side of things, it's a different set of skills from DJ'ing. Speaking of which I'll be showing off those skills at the AM Breaks Teaser underground event tonight. Which might explain why I've somehow put a whole show together without dropping the tempo below 125 bpm. Hey this is the Dance Music Zone - I like to be diverse, but part of the fun is being unpredictable.

So, enjoy the latest episode, packed full of immensley danceable and uplifting tunes - freakazoids, please report to the dancefloor.

Tracklisting - Hour 1

Artist Track Label Buy? (readme)
Bassbin Twins ESW Marine Parade
This is the intro track we play at the start of every show. Slammin Beats!

Bassheads
Is There Anybody Out There Home
Definite house classic from the mid 90's, time for another revival.

Freq Nasty
Freakazoid Botchit and Scarper
I love the record label name, although I have to keep explaining it to non-brits. Whatever, this is one of those records that really turned me onto breaks when I heard Annie Nightingale play it early on Sunday morning.
Mighty Dub Katz
Let The Drums Speak Southern Fried
Yet another Alias of the legendary Norman Cook, no surprise then that this is released on Southern Fried Records. With a horn line that rally's the mob to get down, or soemthing like that.

Tim Delux
It Just Won't Do Underwater
One of the biggest summer anthems from last year, irrepressably happy, sexy and smart. Oh and I love the video.

Roland Clarke
Time Of The Night (Phil Kieran Breaks Mix) Skint
Fatboy Slim relaunched Roland Clarke when he used his vocals on his tribute to house music 'Song For Shelter' - this record is almost a direct sequel, making a couple of references to the Fatboy Slim track.

Foremost Poets
Moonraker (King Unique Mix) Junior
Someone's trying to take over the airwaves.... and now the FCC aren't going to stand in the way.
Luke Slater
Nothing At All (King Unique Mix) Mute
There's somethign Epic about King Unique remixes that means I can't get away with playing just one.... indulge me for a moment

Mint Royale
Shake Me (Plump DJ's Mix) Faith and Hope
But king unique's remixes just pale in comparison to those of the Plump DJ's - and this is a particularly fine example from post big-beat Mint Royale.
Arc and Ciel
The Juice Finger Lickin'
Take some breakbeats and roll some wierd funky noises over the top and you end up with a Finger Lickin' record, not at the cutting edge of breakbeats, just surfing the funky edge.

Ils
Next Level Marine Parade
Breakbeat track with melodic strings and a Didgeriedoo bassline - one of the first real breakbeat anthems.

Tomaz vs The Filterheadz
Sunshine (Carl Cox Mix) Intec
Harder techno take on the tribal chanting techno monster anthem.

Dj Arabesque vs Mario Piu
The Vision Nukleuz
Cheezy hard trance record from 2000, not the most intellectual record in this show, but it'll bring a smile to some and pity from others.
Salt Tank
Dimension (Hybrid Mix) Hooj
Trying desperately to regain some street cred after the vision - here's the Hybrid remix of Salt Tank to finish out the show.

Hour 2 - Special Guest - Shez-Tek

New member of AM Breaks so we thought we'd introduce this well travelled DJ to the DMZ listeners. Originally hailing from Miami he clearly picked up a bit of the Miami breaks sound, he went to university at MIT and independently acquired his DJ skills. Now he's in San Francisco and I'm very happy to introduce this guy and his choice selection of nu-breaks records.

Stay Funky....
see ya Next Week.
