>>about dj scott manley
Scott Manley's parting quote "stay funky" isn't what you'd expect from an astrophysicist -- but this IS San Francisco.
Born in Troon on the west coast of Scotland, Scott picked up his dj skills along with degrees in astronomy, physics and computer science at the University of Glasgow. He later moved to Ireland, to work towards his PhD in astronomy where he studied the cosmic impact hazard - i.e. killer asteroids. Scott wound up combining his technical and music skills to develop some innovative internet music software - the first digital DJ system and the first mp3 radio system.
He later moved to the San Francisco area to work for internet music companies including myplay (where he met Robin Gist) and Napster (where he was among the last of the Napster employees). While in San Francisco, Scott kept dj'ing, and became a resident at HALFLIFE, performing opening breaks sets nearly every Monday night for over a year under the moniker DJ S&M. Scott claims that he spends "silly amounts of money on records" to try and keep his collection complete. When Scott isn't dj'ing at clubs, producing & hosting Dance Music Zone or buying records, he maintains a post-Napster career in computer security.
Scott's favorite artists are too numerous to mention, but Leftfield, Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers, Underworld, BT, Plump DJ's, Hybrid, Circulation, Paul Van Dyk and Mauro Picotto make up a huge part of his collection.
Scott's favorite records include 'Voodoo Ray' - A Guy Called Gerald, 'Flaming June' - BT, and 'Papau New Guinea' - Future Sound Of LondonScott says he enjoys "being intellectual and still playing dirty dumb music, sometimes it's inspired, sometimes it's cheesy, but it's always a good time.
