DJ Resume
Since I came to San Francisco and started playing out again I've built up a pretty long list of parties, in particular I've managed to become something of a regular resident at An Sibin. I've played more gigs there than all my other events put together, at one point I was doing 10 gigs a month there, right now I'm playing about half that.
Sadly, Since writing this, An Sibin moved to new owners who took everything
that was good and left it on the street, now it's no longer host to any
decent parties. But I've moved on now and kept up a fairly regular string
of appearances.
2003 History
Halflife @ Amnesia
When An Sibin changed hands Halflife moved to the mission for a few months
I kept up my intro slots every week for 3 months before Kryptyk moved back
to Alabama and Halflife went on Hiatus
Am Breaks Battle @ Incognita
Take 6 Breaks DJ's and pair them up on a 2x4 TT setup then standback and watch
them mix records in tandem. Well the mixing was occasionally a bit iffy, but
the evening was great and I like to think that the audience danced a bit
harder when I was playing. I even debuted by Scratch DJ skillz, which paled
a little in comparison to the intense breaks, but it's a start.
AM Breaks - Teaser
Underground event put together by the AM Breaks posse, originally myself and
GBA were going to do a double act, but in the end we never managed to get
together often enough to figure it out. So, I ended up going solo, playing
just after midnight, jsut before GBA's live debut, I mixed up dirty breaky
house music with dirty breaks, making the most of the soundsystem, and doing
my damnedest to compete with the techno room.
AM Breaks @ Code : DNA Lounge
Samira, Calamity Jane and myself did our best to follow J:Miah who runs the
monthly backroom breaks at Code, it seems that we're not the first people
to complain about the PA and mixer in the back room at the DNA, but we handled
it in our typical shut up and dance style. And people did dance, especially when
I dropped 'The Gate' from The Plump DJ's - I've never had quite so many
questions about a track.
An Sibin Appearances (In Chronological Order)
1200 Lounge
Originally organised by DJ Blest this was a Monthly Saturday night, I played 3 nights her as a guest in early 2001 . I pretty much played what I wanted to and mixed up breakbeat and house with the occasional bit of hip-hop, DnB and even Tito Puente.
BombShelter
This was the first night that Kryptyk organised, it was one of those 5th saturday events, and managed to cover house, trance, DnB and Hard House. I had the honour of closing the night out, dropping a load of cheeky hard house and techno.
Halflife
Kryptyk eventually managed to secure a Weekly monday night which has become An Sibin's longest running party, I guess Drum n' Bass is one of the few genres of music with fans dedicated enough to come out any time. Oddly enough I'm the only non-DnB resident, I mainly play breakbeats at a much more sedate tempo - I perform the opening set every week, first thing on a monday Night.... not many people turn up, but those that do always enjoy what I'm playing, this definately makes me a candidate for the 'Most Dedicated DJ' award. I also try to fit in occasionally and play Drum n Bass when I'm in the mood, but when faced with more dedicated DnB talent it's hard not to feel intimidated.
Signal
Monday nights are fun, but nobody pays, Friday nights... When this started there were no competing friday night DnB events and we had great nights. I was the unofficial resident, opening really early (8:30pm) and filling in some time before the night really got going. Signal played host to world class DJ talent, but eventually suffered when several other friday night events appeared. Signal eventally lost its slot but has been reborn as an occasional Underground event.
XS
Finally! I got a chance to produce a night of my own, a Saturday night event which would be all about good music and exceptional talent rather than big name stars and flashy flyers. The music selection was somewhat eclectic but always danceable - the first night featured pretty much every style you could dance to, and people dance that night. Fun was had by all and I played quite possibly my favourite gig ever, mixing up house, techno, breaks, and even a bit of AC/DC just to really make the crowd go wild. XS continued for 6 months and featured appearances from Kryptyk, Malloc, Lisa Fox, GBA, Polymorf and the Taco Truck. We even had a fashion show one night which featured some live vocals from the models - especially memorable was the wonderful girl who performed live opera over a Progressive House record - not many DJ's can claim to have worked with opera singers.
Techgnostic
Another New Night at An Sibin, DJ Malloc's new venture plays on the darker side of music, techno & DnB especially. No doubt I'll find my own way to stretch the limits of this remit and dig deep into my record collection.
Disco Nose
This wednesday night party is hosted by the 1 dollar record crew who play mostly 70's and 80's with an infectious attitude and absolutely no trace of DJ skills. I play here for kicks sometimes, trying to make it as non-cheezy as possible.
Other Clubs:
Up n' Down Club
One of those surreal moments, I got a phonecall one Saturday promising a gig at the Up n' Down if I could get there in 15 minutes - the DJ's hadn't turned up. Of course getting a cab on Saturday night would take longer, so I legged it about a mile across the city with my record bag, making it just in time to take over from some random DJ playing Hip-Hop and R&B. I didn't really have the records to keep the groove going so I went my own way and kept it together, despite my hands shaking so much from the exercise.... not my greatest set ever, but a great example of the lengths I've gone to to get a gig.
Mantra Lounge
Mantra was hosted in a Moroccan restaurant in the Tenderloin, this Friday night event mostly played Deep house and featured appearances by Jeno, M3, Frenchy le Freak and hosted by Dr Dave. This space was loved by many of the regulars, lots of places to sit and relax, good drinks, good snacks and a really relaxed attitude. I made 3 appearances, rolling out my deep house grooves with my own twist on the sound, I even had M3 open for me after his commitments meant he had to play early, on a sadder note I played the last set at the party before it went into hibernation.
Defcon & Deathrace 2K2 Desertcrossing Radio
Not really clubs, but another example of my diversity. Defcon is one of the world's leading hacker conventions, held in Las Vegas every year, I was part of the entertainment staff performing a relaxing set of progressive house and breaks, with some hip-hop and rare groove thrown in for good measure. In addition to the performance at the conference I put together a set for the Defcon caravan - the annual expedition for all the crazies who want to drive to Las Vegas, the caravan brings along a radio station for the trip. My show got played just as the caravan reached the nevada state line.
LiveDJs.com
I put in two appearances on this internet station in Spring 2002, this was as part of the Halflife crew, throwing down some tough breaks to the international audience.
Deck-a-Dance
Take a house with million dollar views in the Berkeley hills and have a house party, then advertise it like a rave. I brought along my DJ gear and set it up ghetto style in a bedroom, daisy chaining speakers to try and compete with the main system in the Living room. In the end there wasn't much competition, the main system was on loan from some guy who didn't want anyone but his friends to play, they turned up around 11, played deep house until 2 then took the gear with them. Meanwhile we had about 8 DJ's sharing my home made system, playing 8 different styles and packing the room solid from dusk til dawn.
DJ Malloc dot com Launch Party
A House Party to launch Malloc's vanity website, we had a radio stream broadcasting the event and we managed to get to the top of Live365's listings by heavy internet promotion. I played at the top of the night when everyone was most messed up, I started out with hard trance and kicked up the tempo into some silly hard house, everyone stayed on the dancefloor and random partygoers came in off the street to join the fun.
Raw Sugar
This is a great Tuesday night party in downtown Oakland, they seem to have a pretty diveres music policy, so I was able to stretch beyond simple breakbeats and drop some hip-hop and DnB, I played at the end of the night and managed to bring along a little bit of a fan club.
